A Solemn Undertaking.

I’ll tell you, I am very appreciative of the leadership here at the International House of Prayer.  I’m having difficulty thinking of a place where the leader tells you, “we are wanting to be real intentional about eliminating this particular sin… we don’t want to, but we will hand you over to Satan for the destruction of your flesh if we have to…” and all the congregants sign up for it joyfully.  As biblical as it is, I have never seen it done correctly in an otherwise normal church.

Immorality is affecting the majority of the church… particularly the Western Church.  Not just because immorality is a powerful temptation, but also because of the easy access to it in the developed world.  A few quick facts about pornography:

* At 12 billion a year, revenues of the porn industry in the U.S. are
greater than the NFL, NBA, and Major league baseball combined.
* 25% of total search engine requests are porn-related.
* 90% of 8-18 year olds have viewed pornography online (most while
doing homework).
* 70% of all internet porn traffic occurs during the 9-to-5 workday.
* Americans rent upwards of 800 million porn videos and DVD’s a
year compared to 3.6 billion non-porn videos.
* There are 40 million U.S. adults who regularly visit internet
pornography web sites.

So, as is becoming obvious, immorality is a common issue in the United States.  Did you know that the USA is the porography capital of the world?  It’s true… we have the three largest producers of pornographic material (Playboy, Penthouse, Hustler) as well as the two largest distributers of pornography (Direct TV and Playboy Publishers) in the world.  Some estimate that as many as 75% of men (including ministers) in the American church either are, or have been involved with pornographic material.  Unfortunately, as a has been, I am included in this group of the 75%.  Although this is one of the first times that I have been in the majority on something, it isn’t bringing me joy.
Fast forward to Monday on last week.  It was the March IHOP-KC Staff meeting, and they had let all of the students (FSM and FMA) out of classes early specifically so that we could all go to the meeting.  The reason for this was that Mike had recieved what he believed to be a strong impression from God that we as a people were in need of “inviting the sword of the Lord to our community so that we can break our agreement with immorality.”  So we have made a covenant with God that we will not even engage in conversations or joking that promote sexual immorality, that we will repent if we blow it, and that we will submit to discipline if it becomes a pattern.  Let me tell you, there has been a joyful response to this newfound commitment, but there is also a painful sobriety about it.
If nothing else, this is affirming the people that have taken a violent stand against sin in their own life. Of all of us, those people are the ones who need the most encouragement because they have been doing this alone for so long.  May God grant us all stregnth as we embark on this road to purity.
