Back Off My Pastime, Yo!

Another ugly day of Olypmic Baseball in the books.  In a day that saw a wild one go down between the USA and Olympic host China, you gotta start wondering if team sports are really such a good idea with such an emotionally charged atmosphere.  Three ejections is no laughing matter… especially when you are losing 9-1.  It would just make sense to me, as a fan, that if you are losing by a lot, you don’t want one of your best relievers tossed out for plunking somebody in the head… Just saying…

However, it was a pretty ugly day all the way around the Olympic diamond.  While getting crushed by Japan for what would be their fourth straight loss in this tournament, the Canadians kind of… lost their cool.  Admittedly, nobody expected them to be good.  However, you can’t be pitching around equipment and yelling profanity to try and make yourself feel better.  After all, it kind of ruins the “Olympic mood of goodwill”, doesn’t it?  Maybe there’s a reason these guys aren’t in the pros yet.

South Korea, on the other hand, is looking to win their pool and take the Gold Medal… and yet they blew an 8 run lead to a team (Taiwan) that has been decimated by doping charges.  To top it off, they won… barely (SK 9- Taiwan 8).  Props to the offense for doing what the defense wasn’t.

Right now the USA is tied with Japan for third in their group.  Here’s hoping the Americans can pull out a couple more wins in a hurry.  It would be kind of embarrassing to lose a tournament for a sport that we invented.  It would be as bad as having as a team of NBA stars losing to a bunch of no-name amatures… wait a minute… (2004, for those who forgot).

  1. Wow. So much for good will and sportsmanship! Not to mention just acting like civilized huma beings!

  2. Well, at least we don’t have to worry about seeing such displays of rampant “Olympic spirit” for another 8 years… seeing as how Baseball and Softball have been axed from the London lineup… we’ll see how long that lasts.
