Congratulations… you are a punk…
Go figure… In case you were not yet convinced that the Nobel Prize is little more than a political stunt, I am here to shatter all your previously happy thoughts. Now, some of the Nobel Prizes are legit. Sure, let’s give a couple hundred thousand dollars to the dude who can invent the cure for cancer. However, the peace prize is a joke… and it isn’t even one of those fun jokes that gets funnier every time you hear it because it gets “campy”. Unfortunately, it is a tired and old joke that I don’t think anyone in their right mind is laughing at.
For those who missed the big news, the Nobel committee has convened and selected this year’s winner for all of the Prizes. The laureate of the Peace Prize? Our president, Barack Obama. Here is my question…… WHY?!?! After a mere nine months in office where he has been destroying capitalism, apologizing for America’s existence, and giving half-hearted effort to two wars that he inherited from his predecessor… what has he really done to effect world peace? Oh yeah, he got elected… Duh! How could I forget?!?!
Now to be fair, Obama has been fighting through rough straits since he got elected. The credit crisis was no joke, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan hve been brutal, and his apparent failure to pass healthcare reform has been political arsenic. However, I fail to see how a President considering a commitment of more troops to a hot war-zone is worthy of the NOBEL PEACE PRIZE! But then again, this means that Obama has joined the ranks of other “giants” of the Peace process such as: Bill Clinton (who convinced the Israelis and Palestinians to sign an agreement that neither had any intention of keeping), Jimmy Carter (who is arguably one of the most ineffective Presidents of all time), and Al Gore (global warming + a big mouth + U2 = world peace?). While one side of me would declare that the Swedes are insane, I find it interesting that Obama has already been swept into the company of a long line of pitiful Democrat politicians.
The truly abominable thing, however, is that this means that Obama has been elevated to the ideological level of Desmond Tutu, Mother Theresa, and Ronald Reagan… people who did legitimately heroic deeds in the service of mankind. I don’t care that Obama is the first President of African-American descent. I don’t care that he has a rags-to-riches story that might include a stop in Islam along the way. When you strip away all the ideology and the personality cult stuff, Obama has not done one major, quantifyable act to bring the earth closer to peace. How do I know? He hasn’t had time to do so. Unless you count the whole bit with Zulaya (which, incidentally, is a diplomatic travesty), there has not been a major accomplishment or obstacle to overcome. This leads me to say that the Nobel Committee selected Obama based solely on his charismatic prescence without actually examining his qualifications… but then again, that is why he got elected President in the first place. So yes, the Nobel Peace Prize is absolutely, one hundred percent, a joke… yet I still don’t find it funny.
